A Constitution as an Operating System

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, Version 4.0 Posted on September 4, 2009 by Gordon AndersonSeptember 4, 2009

The video below describes a concept in my book, related to three major organs of society and how they need to work together for the whole. In the present world, the relationship between government, culture, and economy is not well understood, and dysfunctional society, corruption, and oppression is the result. Freedom requires that each social organ fill its own role and not attempt to coopt or control others. A constitution is like a computer operating system or the central nervous system.

For example, government should police culture and referee the economy, but it should not create moral values or run businesses.

The U.S. Budget Crisis

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, Version 4.0 Posted on July 17, 2009 by Gordon AndersonJuly 17, 2009

The United States, through a failure to manage its money properly, has squandered the capital accumulated for the past and accumulated unsustainable debt that will enslave its children. People like David Walker, former head of the US Government Accounting Office (GAO) have long been sounding alarms as in the video below. However, our political leaders are violating basic economic principles as a result of improper legal structures that provide improper motivations, and a lack of general competency and inadequate public awareness.

Since this video was made, the problems Walker was talking about have only escalated because laws that require operating within the bounds of sound economic principles have not been passed and out-of-control spending by those in power continues at the expense of the next generation. This is the moral equivalent of selling your children into slavery or prostitution.

The Fall of Rome

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, Version 4.0 Posted on July 17, 2009 by Gordon AndersonJuly 17, 2009

The Rise and Fall of the United States has many similarities the the Rise and Fall of Rome. This video explains some of the reasons for the collapse of Rome: excessive centralization, inadequate checks on power, and inadequate leadership being primary issues that face the United States today. When Rome collapsed the descendants of its large and prosperous middle class ended up as serfs under feudal lords. This was not the only path Rome could have taken, but it is the result of gradual decay.

Principles Not Politics

Much factional division in the United States today stems from poor systems of government. Whether factions are organized political parties, ethnic groups, or other special interests, they will attempt to leverage government for a selfish purpose if allowed or encouraged.

Good governance is based on principles that suppress factionalism and enable all people to pursue life, liberty, and happiness with equal treatment by the law. The leaders who pursue such principles and pursue the well-being of the whole are known as statesmen, not politicians. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, Version 4.0 is about applying principles to governance in the 21st century.
